Sam Maguire and Tom Markham came to call!

We had a very exciting day in Shrone NS today, when past pupil Aidan O' Mahony, Man-of-the-match Paul Murphy and Kerry minor Shane Ryan came to visit with not one, but two All-Ireland Cups - Sam Maguire and Tom Markham.

They started the visit to Shrone in one of Aidan's old classrooms. He told us all about playing football in our pitch outside with his old school friends - including former Kerry Senior and past pupil Tom O'Sullivan. He said they started the morning with a game of football, by 2 o clock break, the game had turned into the All-Ireland final!

After that, every family had an opportunity to come down and get their photo taken with the 3 players and the 2 cups. The players then signed autographs onto jerseys, iPod covers, hats, programmes, pages and anywhere else they could squeeze them!

The players took the opportunity to have a lunch break, with sandwiches and tea and specially made buns by Marianne Cronin, while everybody had further opportunity to take plenty pictures with the cups!

The players then headed off to the next school, and to keep up with their strict schedule.

Shrone pupils finished the day with a disco, a look back at the photos, and headed home delighted for a free evening of no homework!

Tralee Bay Wetlands Centre, 2nd - 6th Class

The 2nd - 6th classes in Shrone NS spent the day in Tralee Bay Wetlands Centre today as part of the Discover Primary Science and Maths Excellence programme.

The full gallery of photos can be seen by clicking here.

We took the train from Rathmore to Tralee and walked all the way to the Wetlands.

When we arrived at the Wetlands, we had a quick bite to eat and then watched and listened to a presentation about lots of different types of animals. After that, we got ready to face the wet outdoors. We spotted a tank of really beautiful tropical fish and we got a chance to ask loads of questions all about them! (We already knew some of the names of the fish - clown fish and angel fish, from watching "Finding Nemo"!)

After that, we headed outside and had a look into a big pond. We waded in, in our wellies, and had great fun catching all sorts of bugs. We carefully transferred them into white trays of water and got to look at them up close.

After this exciting activity, armed with a pooter, we went for a walk along the boardwalk and into the long grass in search of some mini-beasts. We found plenty of mini-beasts and bugs around the reeds in the wetland to examine!

After lunch, we went back outside to look at and learn about a bank vole that had been caught overnight in a trap. We very gently held the vole, while some of the less brave gave them a rub or just looked from afar! We then released the voles back into the long grass and into the wild.

We then had one last activity - climbing the viewing tower to watch the birds from up high! It was a lovely 360 degree view of the Tralee area and out onto Tralee Bay. From this view we saw some sleeping swans, a water hen, ducks, gulls and other birds.

We finished our day with a walk back to the train station to board the train to Rathmore. We were very excited to hear, that after tweeting about our trip in the morning, Irish Rail had tweeted us back, welcoming us aboard and telling us to enjoy our trip!
