Shrone have qualified for the knockout stages of the Credit Union two teacher schools competition. Shrone faced a hotly fancied Glenflesk in the opening match of.the group. The last encounter between the sides saw a covid depleted Shrone side heavily beaten, the Shrone management and players were determined to prove that their full strength team could hold their own. And so it was, in challenging conditions Shrone lined out markus in goal, Danielle and Marc full back line , Thomas and cathal midfield and Grace and Eabhla in the forwards. From the throw in Shrone showed fierce determination and really made life difficult for Glenflesk forcing them into kicking the ball wide twice thanks to clever defending from Thomas and Danielle before they opened the scoring. Shrone responded with a point from a free by Marc Cremin and took the lead thanks to the boot of Eabhla Murphy. Glenflesk were rattled and it took a superb effort from Roan Guerin to get a goal and settle Glenflesk nerves. Shrone will regret some misses in front of goal, while playing well and Thomas O Sullivan turning over Glenflesk in possession time and time again could not punish them on the scoreboard. Shrone added another point from a free and Markus denied Glenflesk a certain goal before halftime.
The game finely balanced 2-2 Glenflesk 3 points to Shrone.
In the second half Shrone bravely stayed in the game trading points but failing to get the goal they needed Marc agonisingly close on two occasions, hitting the crossbar and missing by inches from a fisted effort under under high ball. Cathal Cronin had a superb game at midfield and readers must be reminded that he is still only in 4th class yet played with the skill and strengtht of a 6th class player. Another goal from Glenflesk ended the match as a contest and Glenflesk finished 3-7 to 0-5 winners.
Shrone and Meentogues opted to play each other in a challenge match to keep bodies warm and sharpen their skills. Jessica Doherty in goals. Markus and Aoibhin backs, Roisin and Daniel Lenihan midfield, Beatrice and Shay making up the full forward line. Meentogues proved to be a very strong side having won both matches in their group and gave Shrone a very stern test and experience. Jessica performing two great saves in the second half while Daniel and Roisin saw a lot of action in midfield. Aoibhin proved that she is one to watch for the future and Markus showed he is capable.of playing outfield just as much goalkeeper. Shay and Beatrice kept the Meentogues defence busy but failed to get the scores needed to win the match.
It was all or nothing for Shrone and Hollymount in the final game of the day. The winners would save their season and get at least one more day out in the Shrone jersey. The team that started Jessica in goal, Isabella and Laura in the backs, Cathal and Thomas midfield and eanna and Danielle in the forwards. Shrone had beaten Hollymount on their previous encounter but just like and Cork V Kerry match, previous form.would count for nothing. Hollymount took an early lead from from goal and it took Shrone a while to get to grips with their neighbours Cathal scoring a nice point and Eanna Murphy hitting the backmof the net. It was all.shtone for a while until Hollymount pounced for 2 more goals and at halftime it was anyone's game, Hollymount 3 goals , shrone 3 goals and 4 points. Fresh legs were needed for the second half and the introduction of Grace Marc, Roisin, Aoibhin Markus and Shay was enough to finish the game strongly. Shrone will now face a strong Meentogues side in the semi final to be played on the 30th of May, let us hope for better weather!
