Good Luck Ultan!

Good Luck to Ultan Dillane playing with Connacht against Ulster on St. Stephen's Day.

He also played 12 minutes against Leinster last weekend.

Ultan visited our school 2 years ago to raise our Green Flag.  He spent the day in the school making pottery, playing rugby with the children,  and enjoying the day!

We wish him all the best in his rugby  career!

Santa Claus

In school this month Aaron and Carina made a papier mache Santa Claus. Carina blew up 2 balloons. One for his body and one for his head. They stuck strips of newspapers all over the balloons using glue. They did that 6 times. They then put on 2 layers of plain white paper. Aaron painted the body red and his head skin colour. Carina then made hands using paper and stuck them on the body. When the paint was dry they made a belt and stuck it around his body. Aaron stuck cotton wool on santas jacket and Carina helped Aaron glue Santa's beard, eyes and nose on. They finished Santa by making him a hat.  Carina then made a chimney for Santa. Aaron had great fun making Santa and now wants to make an elf!

The Three Little Pigs

On Tuesday the 9th of December the pupils from Shrone N.S. and
Pre-School children went to the Ivy Leaf Theatre in Castleisland to see "The Three Little Pigs". We liked all the characters, but I think the Big Bad Wolf was the favourite! We were delighted at the sight of Santa coming down the chimney. He added a special twist to the story. We were delighted that we were all on the nice list but especially Sarah and Jamie who got a special mention. We had a great day out. We are looking forward to our next drama!

INTO Mass for Rev. Thomas O'Connor

A mass in memory of Rev. Thomas O'Connor, Moulagow and New Jersey, was celebrated in the Church of Our Lady, Shrone by Fr. Michael O'Connor, assisted by Fr. Pat O'Donnell on Thursday, October 23rd 2014.

Fr. Thomas, who died in 2008 gave a sum of $20,000 to INTO's benevolent fund.

His father, also named Thomas, taught in Shrone NS from 1917 - 1930. He died suddenly in December 1930, leaving a wife and five young children.

The INTO benevolent fund was a great help to the family. Four of the five children received second level education. Two boys, Michael and Thomas, were ordained priests. Fr. Michael served as a priest in Liverpool and the Isle of Man. Fr. Thomas spent his whole ministry in the Diocese of Trenton, U.S.A.

A plaque was unveiled by Mr. Séan McMahon, President of the INTO. This will be erected at the entrance to Shrone NS.

Noel Ward, INTO Treasurer, and Ann Horan, BFC for District XIII were in attendance. INTO members from the Rathmore Branch, both past and present, also attended, as well as relatives of the O'Connor family.

Afterwards, everyone attended a reception in the Top of the Hill bar.

Sam Maguire and Tom Markham came to call!

We had a very exciting day in Shrone NS today, when past pupil Aidan O' Mahony, Man-of-the-match Paul Murphy and Kerry minor Shane Ryan came to visit with not one, but two All-Ireland Cups - Sam Maguire and Tom Markham.

They started the visit to Shrone in one of Aidan's old classrooms. He told us all about playing football in our pitch outside with his old school friends - including former Kerry Senior and past pupil Tom O'Sullivan. He said they started the morning with a game of football, by 2 o clock break, the game had turned into the All-Ireland final!

After that, every family had an opportunity to come down and get their photo taken with the 3 players and the 2 cups. The players then signed autographs onto jerseys, iPod covers, hats, programmes, pages and anywhere else they could squeeze them!

The players took the opportunity to have a lunch break, with sandwiches and tea and specially made buns by Marianne Cronin, while everybody had further opportunity to take plenty pictures with the cups!

The players then headed off to the next school, and to keep up with their strict schedule.

Shrone pupils finished the day with a disco, a look back at the photos, and headed home delighted for a free evening of no homework!

Tralee Bay Wetlands Centre, 2nd - 6th Class

The 2nd - 6th classes in Shrone NS spent the day in Tralee Bay Wetlands Centre today as part of the Discover Primary Science and Maths Excellence programme.

The full gallery of photos can be seen by clicking here.

We took the train from Rathmore to Tralee and walked all the way to the Wetlands.

When we arrived at the Wetlands, we had a quick bite to eat and then watched and listened to a presentation about lots of different types of animals. After that, we got ready to face the wet outdoors. We spotted a tank of really beautiful tropical fish and we got a chance to ask loads of questions all about them! (We already knew some of the names of the fish - clown fish and angel fish, from watching "Finding Nemo"!)

After that, we headed outside and had a look into a big pond. We waded in, in our wellies, and had great fun catching all sorts of bugs. We carefully transferred them into white trays of water and got to look at them up close.

After this exciting activity, armed with a pooter, we went for a walk along the boardwalk and into the long grass in search of some mini-beasts. We found plenty of mini-beasts and bugs around the reeds in the wetland to examine!

After lunch, we went back outside to look at and learn about a bank vole that had been caught overnight in a trap. We very gently held the vole, while some of the less brave gave them a rub or just looked from afar! We then released the voles back into the long grass and into the wild.

We then had one last activity - climbing the viewing tower to watch the birds from up high! It was a lovely 360 degree view of the Tralee area and out onto Tralee Bay. From this view we saw some sleeping swans, a water hen, ducks, gulls and other birds.

We finished our day with a walk back to the train station to board the train to Rathmore. We were very excited to hear, that after tweeting about our trip in the morning, Irish Rail had tweeted us back, welcoming us aboard and telling us to enjoy our trip!

Exploring Rocks!

This morning, the Senior Room helped the children in the Junior Room to become geologists when they went out into the morning sun and explored a variety of different rocks. They observed each rock carefully to find out if the rocks could float or sink or if they were permeable. They looked even closer at the rocks using magnifying glasses to identify patterns in the rock, the colour of the rock and whether the rock was hard or soft. As well as the rocks we found around the school grounds, we also had some unusual lovely glittery quartz rocks, some porous volcanic rocks with loads of small holes and we even found out that chalk is a type of rock! We recorded all of our information on a chart.
